Description
The impressive motte and bailey medieval castle at Lydford on the edge of Dartmoor in west Devon, England, UK. Lydford was a former Saxon stronghold of strategic importance with its own mint. Following the Conquest, the Normans built a fort nearby of which just earthworks remain. This site originates from around 1195. In 1239 King Henry III granted Lydford to his brother, Richard Earl of Cornwall. The present tower was rebuilt in the 13th century primarily for use as a prison and courthouse. Lydford was an important stannary town that governed other Devon stannary towns under stannary law. This law was applied to govern the numerous tin districts and tin miners who worked alluvial deposits in the area. The castle became notorious for harsh punishments, with one inmate calling it 'the most annoious, contagious and detestable place within this realm'.
