Description
Hidden from view until I reached the windswept top of notorious Gibbett Hill in West Dartmoor, Devon, England were some friendly grazing locals, hardy Dartmoor ponies. Gibbett Hill stands at 1158 feet (353m) next to the main route from Tavistock to Okehampton near to Mary Tavy. In years gone by the area was plagued by highwaymen. Those that were caught were punished by death either by hanging from a gibbet on this hill or by being left to starve to death in a suspended cage. The felons were left as a grisly display as a warning for others to heed. Due to the prominence of this hill, their remains were visible for miles around. Numerous ghostly tales and legends are associated with the area. Taken in the Autumn, mid October.
