Description
The view looking out of the South Gatehouse of Launceston Castle in East Cornwall taken from the castle courtyard or bailey. The Victorian gothic townhall and guildhall built between 1881-87 can be seen framed in the distance. The imposing Norman castle, of motte and bailey design, has been attributed to Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother of William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman conquest, possibly as early as 1067, whilst others mention Brian of Brittany for its foundation. Today the castle is managed by English Heritage.

Stunning shot, Richard! I love the wonderful masonry of the arch that so perfectly frames the scene inside. Superb! L/F

Beautiful details on the stone, and love the way the arch provides a glimpse into the past!

Very nice image but could be improved by Photoshopping out the car, lines in the road, and post in the middle. A crop in the bottom of the image would serve to focus the viewer on the image seen beyond the arch.
Richard Brookes replied:
Thank you for your kind & constructive comment Kenneth. Much appreciated. I was aware of modern living impinging on old architecture. Everybody's ideal image is different and subjective. I don't tend to alter my photos too much and like to show places as they are as much as possible. I'm not attempting to produce a picture postcard. Some people may like the juxtaposition of old and new and wonder what lies around the corner from where the car is coming. The old world looking at the new etc. Did try different crops but didn't want to lose any of the lovely stonework. It is very much an individual thing....
