Description
View from the North Gatehouse at Launceston Castle with the beautiful Georgian Eagle House (built 1755) in the distance. The imposing Norman castle, of motte and bailey design, has been attributed to Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother of William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman conquest, possibly as early as 1067, whilst others mention Brian of Brittany for its foundation. Today the castle is managed by English Heritage and dominates the town from its prominent position.
