Description
The winter sun sets behind the poignant memorial to Charlotte Dymond. Charlotte was sadly murdered here on Sunday 14 April 1844 near to the River Alan in the shadow of Rough Tor on desolate Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, SW England, UK. It is one of Cornwall's most notorious murders and caused great uproar at the time. Charlotte, aged 18, was a domestic servant at nearby Penhale Farm and has been described as pretty and flirtatious. Her boyfriend, Matthew Weeks who was in his early 20s and also a servant at the farm, was described as well dressed but not good looking, teeth missing and with a limp. He disappeared soon after and was caught in Plymouth and later hung for the crime outside Bodmin Gaol at noon on 12 August 1844 in front of a crowd of several thousand. Although some controversy surrounds the circumstantial evidence, a confession and another suitor who may have contributed to the event, the weight of evidence against Weeks would seem compelling. Her ghost is said to roam the moor dressed in her Sunday best. Taken one February
