Description
An old preserved Mine wagon at Carnkie, Cornwall, SW England, UK. A poignant memorial to the endeavours and ingenuity of those who worked in incredibly harsh conditions in the long gone mining industry once prevalent in this area of Cornwall. Originally a copper mining area which was facing abandonment as copper deposits were depleted but fortunes were turned around in the 1860s when especially rich tin ore deposits of the nearby Great Flat Lode were discovered. A mining boom followed.
Due to the importance of these areas and the techniques and machinery developed and exported around the world much of the surrounding landscape is part of the protected UNESCO World Heritage Cornwall and West Devon mining landscape (no 1215)
There is fascinating evidence of past mining in the area spanning centuries but most of the building remains are Victorian including many of the iconic Cornish engine houses used to house massive steam engines to assist with pumping, winding and crushing ore. Arsenic and other minerals were also mined. Taken at Carnkie Crossroads.
