Description
Wonderful clouds gather behind the cairn on the summit ridge near Little Rough Tor and Showery Tor on the remote upland wilderness of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, England UK.
Rough is pronounced 'row' to rhyme with 'cow' locally. Nearby along the adjoining ridge is Rough Tor summit at 1313 ft (400m) above mean sea level, making it the second highest point in Cornwall behind Brown Willy the highest point at 1,378 feet (420 m). The area is part of St Breward parish near Camelford, SW England UK.
As can be seen with the developing clouds the high moorland area influences local weather conditions.
There is also considerable evidence of human habitation here. A neolithic enclosure encircles Rough Tor summit, with Bronze Age hut circles, standing stones, stone circles, cairns (a pile rocks and stones), barrows (burial mounds) and field systems nearby. It is thought that the use of standing stones (menhirs and megaliths) and stone piles (cairns) may have had ritual or religious significance or they might have been used as waymarkers in these wild places. Perhaps, occasionally, they just did it for fun like we often do today when we stack or balance rocks or build sand castles. Maybe they are primitive artworks?
Rough Tor was also mentioned in Daphne Du Maurier's famous novel Jamaica Inn.
Taken on a beautiful winter's day one February.
