Description
An old cast iron winch at Tintagel harbour on the North Cornwall coast. Situated on the clifftop overlooking the harbour the winch was used to haul in boats and their cargoes. Other ropes, including some attached to rowing boats, also helped boats to navigate the treacherous rocks surrounding the small narrow harbour. Slate was quarried and tin mined locally. The Cornish tin mining area became an inspiration for the Poldark novels by Winston Graham.
