Description
Fascinating yet poignant. One of three remaining Daimler-Benz diesel engines at the wreck site of Schnellboot S-89 or E-Boat (as called by the Allies) of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy). Located at Tremoutha Haven a remote and fairly inaccessible boulder strewn beach in North Cornwall near to Crackington Haven. S89 saw action in the North Sea, the Black Sea and possibly the Baltic. Following World War Two the Royal Navy acquired S89. The boat was lost in 1946 after breaking free and running aground whilst being towed by the Royal Navy to another site to be used for target practice. The relatively good condition of some of the metalwork and components after some 70 years in the rough and unforgiving North Atlantic Cornish surf is testament to the quality of engineering and materials used in the engine's construction. One of three prop shafts can also be seen in the distance. The engines were Daimler-Benz BOF8 MB501/511 diesel engines with 20 cylinder V arrangement with 10 cylinders each side, each engine delivering 2,050hp, being 6,150hp in total.
