The view looking out of the South Gatehouse of Launceston Castle in East Cornwall taken from the castle courtyard or bailey. The Victorian gothic townhall and guildhall built between 1881-87 can be seen framed in the distance. The imposing Norman castle, of motte and bailey design, has been attributed to Robert, Count of Mortain, half-brother of William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman conquest, possibly as early as 1067, whilst others mention Brian of Brittany for its foundation. Today the castle is managed by English Heritage.
