Once again the Contrast in your work is amazing. The sky is such a deep blue and the grass a bright lime green. Then the softness of the plants and courseness of the stack stone. It's perfect.

Richard Brookes replied:

Many thanks for your generous comments Paula!

Thanks for the stunning capture and historical significance...I so love the countryside to which you take me on holiday! The days of fine china teacups and scones with Devonshire cream and curd! Ahhhh!

Richard Brookes replied:

Many thanks Laurel, it's my pleasure. I'm very lucky to be so close to it. Regarding cream teas...don't forget...the clotted cream goes on top of the jam in Cornwall and before the jam in Devon. People get quite excited about that!

I love your work and love the history of each. Amazing!

Richard Brookes replied:

Thank you so much Paula, I'm pleased that you do. I really enjoy exploring and recording these places and finding out about them. It brings them to life.

Artist's Description

Derelict and overgrown buildings line the long abandoned and little known quay at the port of New Quay, Tamar Valley, Devon, SW England, UK. These and other ruined buildings, (believed to include warehouses, an inn and cottages) lime kilns, an inclined plain and remnants of the old mineral railway are poignant reminders of the once bustling Victorian industrial hamlet and mining port on the steep, winding banks of the river Tamar, the natural boundary between Devon and Cornwall. New Quay was formerly an important copper, tin and later arsenic port serving local mines but was abandoned early in the twentieth century when cheaper imports made local mines uneconomical. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Landscape that is the Cornwall and West Devon World Mining Landscape (no.1215) since 2006. Taken in late November sunshine.

About Richard Brookes

Richard Brookes

Images exploring Devon & Cornwall's remote inspiring landscapes, breathtaking coast, ruins and shipwrecks in this beautiful part of SW England, UK. The stunning natural beauty of the area, which changes with the light, seasons and coastal climate, is constantly inspiring. There is so much history here too with human occupation spanning millennia. A photographer's dream. My photos are mostly taken spontaneously in less visited places or from unusual viewpoints. If they hold your attention, lift your spirit, make you ask questions, make you smile or fire your imagination and your wish to explore then it is more than enough reward....although you can buy prints too! ;)My photos mostly explore beautiful rural North Devon & Cornwall...
