Description
The poignant overgrown ruins of the derelict whim or winding engine house at Salisbury Shaft, Marke Valley mines on the remote slopes of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, SW England, UK. The engine house was built around 1876 to support a 26 inch cylinder steam winding or whim engine. The mine produced around 130,000 tons of copper ore until closure of the shaft in 1883 and the whole mine operations eventually stopped in 1890. It was significant enough to have a mineral railway branch line serve it as part of the Liskeard & Caradon Railway. The area is a scheduled monument and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site The Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape. Taken in October.
