Description
A view through the doorway of the ruined Vanner (ore separation) house towards the Wheal Bassett mine stamps (ore crushing) engine house built in 1868. These industrial remnants are a testament to the engineering capabilities of the Victorians in mining and processing ore from tin and related deposits of copper, lead, arsenic and silver. The mine shut in 1918 after prices slumped following the First World War. The surrounding landscape is dotted with disused mines and associated buildings and now forms part of a World Heritage Site and the fascinating Great Flat Lode Trail.
