Description
Victorian copper and tin mining activities transformed this area into what resembles a spectacular moonscape or lunar landscape almost alien in nature. The spoil heaps or dumps from discarded mine material dominate the landscape here on the flanks of remote Caradon Hill, high on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, SW England, UK. This view was taken in the Autumn near to Kittows Shaft, part of the old abandoned South Caradon Mine. The extensive mine with its many shafts was established by Captain James Clymo and his sons and the Kittow family after copper was discovered in 1833. It ran until the 1890s. The area is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape (number 1215). The pioneering industrial developments, innovations and techniques used in this area were hugely important to the Industrial Revolution and exported all over the world. Many of the miners emigrated overseas after the mines closed.
