Description
The impressive late Georgian Iron Bridge in North Road, Exeter, Devon, SW England, UK. Built in 1834-5 it was cast at the ironworks of Russell and Brown of Blaina, Monmouthshire, Wales. The bridge improved the access into the city from St David's to the north. It replaced the difficult, narrow route by crossing the steep Longbrook valley to the former North Gate entrance to the city (ancient gate removed in 1769). The bridge or viaduct is 800 feet long with six 40 foot arches. At the time iron bridges were becoming out of favour and a suspension bridge was also considered.
