Description
The serenely beautiful but potentially deadly lake at Wheal Fanny, one of the Victorian copper mines of the Devon Great Consols Mining group in the Tamar Valley. Reputedly named after the daughter of the engineer who persuaded the Duke Of Bedford to mine his land. The group were once the largest copper producers in the world and then became the largest arsenic producers in the world. Although being reclaimed by nature the surrounding land and lake has been contaminated with the waste materials and run-off from the workings and huge spoil heaps.

It's a pity that such a beautiful landscape can be so potentially deadly. Interesting description. L/tw

Many thanks for your comment. Yes it is a fascinating area. Fortunately, more recently, the area has become a public amenity. Old workings have been extensively replanted, old mine shafts fenced off and there are interesting bike and hiking trails with information points.
