Description
Houseman's Shaft Pumping Engine house was built in 1881 for the South Phoenix Mine. It housed a 50 inch steam pumping engine and was named after the company chairman. The view is looking at the bob wall of the engine house, with the chimney stack hidden to the rear of the building. Copper, tin and manganese were extracted from this shaft from the Grace Dieu lode but results were inconsistent and production stopped and started. The Victorian mine originated around 1836, although surface mining history in the area goes back centuries. Improvements were made in the 1880s but the mine was abandoned in 1898 after going into receivership. Much was demolished and dismantled after this. A short lived attempt to rework the mine in 1907 failed and it finally closed in 1911. The ruins were consolidated and repaired in the 1990s and now house a Mining Heritage Exhibition on the ground floor. The mine is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Mining Landscape being located high on Bodmin Moor near Minions, Linkinhorne, Caradon & Liskeard Mining District, Cornwall, SW England, UK.
