Description
Bideford Long Bridge illuminated at night crosses the River Torridge in North Devon. The medieval masonry arched Long Bridge dates from 1474 & spans the River Torridge near its estuary and connects the East and West of the town. It is believed an original timber bridge was built in 1286. The bridge has 24 arches all of different sizes. The traditional explanation is that each arch was funded by a different local guild whilst another theory is that the piers of the arches were built on naturally existing and therefore randomly situated large stones in the river. The River Torridge is the setting for the famous and much loved novel 'Tarka The Otter' by Henry Williamson. In the C16th Bideford was Britain's third largest port and Sir Walter Raleigh landed his first shipment of tobacco here.
